2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Friends,

The 2020-21 season was a year of sweeping change and extraordinary service to our community. The Columbus Symphony is proud of the important milestones we have reached, and the musical impact made together. We differentiated ourselves from other American orchestras by doubling down on our commitment to serving the community and maintaining all full-time musicians and staff at full employment through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Music’s transformative power reinvigorated our community and lifted our spirits when we needed it the most, through remote celebrations and socially distanced programs. We broadcast the Holiday Spectacular across multiple TV networks for the first time, thanked our frontline workers and military veterans through a free Patriotic Pops concert, reached a remarkable 66,000 children through expanded music education opportunities, and reimagined our approach to providing artistic excellence in new concert formats.

We have truly witnessed the power of community over the past year that underscores our mission to build and inspire a strong community through music.

In this spirit, the Columbus Symphony launched We Are Here for You, an innovative, three-year initiative centered on meaningful service to the central Ohio community. Our deepened commitment and broadened reach elevate and reflect our region’s growth, vitality, and diversity, making cultural opportunities accessible to all.

Our dedication to working towards a brighter future for everyone in central Ohio is made possible through the passion and generosity of our many supporters, patrons, and volunteers like you. As you look back on the inspiring moments from the past year, we thank you for being a member of our Columbus Symphony family.

Sincerely,

Lisa Barton

Our Mission

Inspiring and building a strong community through music.

Our Vision

The national exemplar of a vibrant, dynamic orchestra.

Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

The Columbus Symphony stands against racism and inequity, and stands for inclusion, diversity, equality, and justice for all. We recognize and are saddened by the pain caused by racism and inequities of all kinds. We support those who are peacefully raising their voices to ensure justice, equality, and attention be given to enable our community to heal, build, and grow together.

Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin has called on all residents to create a more just Columbus. We believe in our responsibility as an organization and as individuals to be a part of this process. We stand ready to listen, learn, and take action to better serve every child and every adult in our community. We stand ready to be a part of the healing during this time.

Several years ago, we adopted a philosophy and commitment in support of “ONE CSO,” as we firmly believe that the future is brighter when we are all in it together. Our role is to ensure that the brilliance and healing power of music is accessible to all members of the Columbus community.
As individuals, as an orchestra, and as a community, we have the power to transform lives and a mutual responsibility to build a more inclusive, more peaceful, and more inspiring world.

  • The CSO Cares About Kids: A Virtual Celebration, an online benefit to support CSO education programs, was offered in the place of our annual Benefit Concert in March 2021. In addition to the online celebration, accessible for free to the community, we made the benefit a week of service: each full-time musician donated their time and talent to provide educational outreach opportunities to children throughout central Ohio, such as coaching, mentoring, and presentations via Zoom for students in Columbus City Schools, KIPP Columbus, Urban Strings Columbus, Alvis House, and Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services.

Launched in 2019, Putting the Star in Columbus is a three-year initiative to connect the Columbus Symphony to strategic civic priorities and advance Columbus as a destination and a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

In 2021-22, we are expanding Putting the Star in Columbus by piloting a new focus, “We Are Here for You,” centered on extraordinary and meaningful service to the central Ohio community, which will see the CSO increase its outreach to the many diverse populations of Columbus and surrounding areas by removing barriers such as cost and physical location.

What “We Are Here for You” looks like in its pilot year (2021-22):

  • Here for Families:

    • All children aged 6-16 will receive free admission to all 2021-22 Masterworks subscription concerts.
  • Here for Rural Communitites:

    • The Columbus Symphony will increase its reach to underserved communities whose geographic location makes attending in the concert hall difficult. In the 2021-22 season, the CSO will engage these outlying communities with at least eight local concerts throughout the Appalachian region, along the Ohio River, and other rural locations based on critical need.
  • Here for Individuals with Disabilities:

      • Free admission for individuals accompanying and assisting patrons with physical disabilities attending any 2021-22 Columbus Symphony concert.
  • Here for Heroes:

        • In partnership with the Vet Tix Foundation, the Columbus Symphony will make free tickets available for active-duty members of the military, veterans, and their families to attend all 2021-22 Masterworks subscription concerts.
        • Healthcare workers, first responders, and frontline employees can request a voucher good for free admission for two to any one 2021- 22 Masterworks subscription concert.
  • Here for Students:

        • The Columbus Symphony will double the number of Young People’s Concerts presented during the 2021-22 season, providing free tickets to all Title 1 elementary schools and making every effort to pay for bus transportation if a barrier to attendance.
        • While the pandemic prevented in-school performances in the 2020-21 school year, the Columbus Symphony will double the number of in-school concerts as compared to the 2019-20 school year. Offered to schools free of charge, the CSO has set a goal to engage central Ohio students with at least 18 in-school concerts during the 2021-22 school year.
  • Here for Diverse Populations:

        • In August 2021, the CSO partnered with the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department to begin our free, outdoor Community Concerts to Columbus city parks, to increase our presence in diverse neighborhoods and communities and to offer a broader opportunity for inclusivity and accessible programming.
        • In 2018, the Columbus Symphony launched CSO Cares, a program that supports the missions of 11 central Ohio social service organizations and schools through partnerships that bring the transformative power of music to their clients, constituencies, students, and staffs. In the 2021-22 season, the CSO has added Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services to the roster of organizations served by CSO Cares, and we continue to add to the program’s diverse roster as opportunities arise.
  • Here for Seniors:

        • The Columbus Symphony will increase the number of free, on-site engagement events at central Ohio senior living facilities, setting a goal of a 30% increase for the 2021-22 season.
        • All patrons aged 90+ will receive free admission to all 2021-22 Masterworks subscription concerts.
  • Here for the Business Community:

        • The Columbus Symphony will perform at least 20 free, small ensemble concerts in the 2021-22 season on-site at local businesses to positively contribute to the mental and physical health and well-being of employees.

The University of Dubuque Organ Concert

For the third time, the Columbus Symphony made a return to The University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, to dedicate the new custom-crafted pipe organ, Opus 97, in the John and Alice Butler Hall, Heritage Center on Saturday, May 15, 2021. A special performance by the Columbus Symphony featured world-renowned organist Alan Morrison and was available for in-person viewing and by a live stream for audiences everywhere. Throughout the week, Columbus Symphony musicians engaged in outreach and education activities across the area and once again shared the joy of live music with students and residents.

“Remarkable support from philanthropists Joseph and Linda Chlapaty makes this cultural experience possible. Because of Joe’s strong connection to both his alma mater and the Columbus Symphony, a longstanding and meaningful relationship has formed, connecting the two communities through the power of music.” – Denise Rehg

The 2021 Symphony Gala on August 14, 2021 at The Fives, the new home of White Castle, as we recognized Marci and Bill Ingram as Honorary Chairs. With an Honorary Committee of distinguished volunteers and sponsors, the Gala celebrated the orchestra’s critical role in Illuminating the Future Together for our children and community through the transformative power of music. The generosity of our community helped to make the 2021 event the biggest and most successful in the 70-year history of the Columbus Symphony!

The evening included special performances by our Columbus Symphony musicians, solos by concertmaster Joanna Frankel, and a heartwarming serenade by Broadway singer Jennifer Cherest.

Education

The Columbus Symphony is elevating the quality of life in our community by being a leading music education resource in the community and by being an organization that makes a difference. The Columbus Symphony is dedicated to educating and entertaining people of all ages by fostering talent, creating future audiences, nurturing intellectual development, and sparking creativity in students, families, teachers, and lifelong learners.

Columbus Symphony Education programs are made possible by the generous support of Gay Su Pinnell.

Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras

In 2020-2021, over 500 young musicians participated in Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras programming:

There were many unique challenges for the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras program in the 2020-2021 season as the CSYO took up residence in the Ohio Theater, Verne Riffe Center, and CAPA rehearsal rooms when traditional rehearsal venues were closed.

A new collaboration with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Columbus Youth Orchestras called Youth Orchestras Online (YOO) was created to engage students with bi-weekly seminars on a range of topics important to young youth orchestra musicians.

When in-person rehearsals were not possible, students were offered weekly virtual Zoom sectionals led by our own CSO musicians.  A total of 258 sessions were led during this time from late November through January.

Columbus City Schools Partnership

The Columbus Symphony continued to partner with Columbus City Schools virtually throughout 2020-2021 and continued to enrich Columbus’ students’ education through virtual programs such as producing Link Up Concert: The Orchestra Moves, virtual presentations with CSO musicians about careers in music, and holding  Columbus All-City Orchestra online for young musicians from Columbus high schools.

In addition, we expanded our partnership with Columbus City Schools, a launched our asynchronous-based curriculum for all third-grade students throughout the district. This program is called CSO in the Classroom and consists of a weekly 7 to 10-minute video, worksheet, and culminating concert videos for two-15 week music modules.  First-year modules topics included instruments of the orchestra and classical music composers.

Interactive Websites

Committed to being a leading music education resource to meet the growing education demands for the arts in our community, the Columbus Symphony launched two new, interactive websites for students, parents, teachers, and caregivers in September 2020 to promote online learning, featuring over 85 videos recorded by Columbus Symphony musicians. Throughout these websites the first year live, over 22,000 unique visitors visited used, and interacted with this content.

Each site is comprised of three areas – “Learn,” “Play/Perform,” and “Visit” – to explore, engaging students with activities and information tailored to each age group.

CSOKidsKorner

A fun, music education site for grades K-6 that features Columbus Symphony mascot Bee-thoven as the virtual guide.

EXPLORE
Symphonic Teens

An informative web site for teens and aspiring young musicians.

EXPLORE

Mindful Music Moments

The Columbus Symphony expanded our sponsorship of Mindful Music Moments, offering the program free to all Columbus City Schools and central Ohio preschools. Mindful Music Moments a program to teach stress reduction and mindfulness techniques through classical music expanded greatly to serve 15,900 students at 30 schools and 9 pre-schools through in 2020-2021 season.

MEA Awards

The Music Educator Awards were reimagined for the 2020-2021 season. With the addition of a new streamlined online nominations process and the attention of a new Lifetime Achievement Award, we saw a 600% percent growth in nominations.

Our Brands & Program Areas

Since 1951, the Columbus Symphony has been proud to serve as the region’s flagship music performance organization. With our musicians who live, work, and teach in central Ohio, we offer the transformative power of music through our core classical Masterworks series, Pops, Picnic with the Pops, and Education and Community Engagement.

Masterworks

A total of 11 socially-distanced programs (18 concerts) were offered in the Ohio Theatre. Programs included several Beethoven symphonies (in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth), Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, two Russian Winter Festival programs, and programs featuring works by Schubert, Dvořák, Haydn, and Mozart. These reduced-capacity concerts were offered in lieu of the previously-announced 2020-21 series, which was canceled in late 2020. In fall/winter, six free virtual concerts were available for streaming in a new series, An Evening with the Symphony: The Masterworks.

Virtual Concert Patron Remarks.

Summer Night Music Neighborhood Concerts returned in 2021, with concerts at community venues in Galloway, Marysville, Dublin, Columbus, Lithopolis, Powell, Newark, and New Albany.

Specials

2020 Holiday Spectacular: Home with You for the Holidays: In the spirit of being an active participant in the healing process for our community, the CSO pursued an extraordinary undertaking to make the beloved tradition of the “Holiday Pops” program available through television broadcast to every resident in the greater Columbus viewing area for the first time in organizational history. The 2020 Holiday Spectacular: Home with You for the Holidays reached over 100,000 individuals, many of whom have never attended a CSO concert.

Recorded on the stage of the Ohio Theatre, the Holiday Spectacular video was broadcast on WBNS-10TV on December 12 and on WCMH NBC4 on December 25. In addition to broadcasts on WBNS-10TV and WCMH NBC4, the concert was made available for in-facility streaming at no charge for local hospitals, senior nursing homes, and 13 correctional institutions throughout Ohio. The program was available for the public to stream for free on our website from Dec 25-31 and has been nominated for the 57th Annual Ohio Valley Regional Emmy awards.

Socially-distanced Valentine’s Concert: An Evening of Romance: Led by Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz, this intimate musical experience featured celebrated vocalists Jessica Hendy and Scott Coulter, accompanied by John Boswell, alongside the full orchestra in the Palace Theatre.

To celebrate the sweetest day of the year, every attendee was treated to a VIP Sweetheart Experience with sparkling wine, chocolates, a red rose, and a commemorative photo.

Nationwide Picnic with the Pops

Picnic with the Pops and Popcorn Pops returned bigger than ever to fill the Columbus Commons with music through eight programs (10 concerts), with over 18,000 attending.

A highlight of the season included a special free performance of Patriotic Pops on June 25, for healthcare workers, first responders, active members of the military, and veterans, with over 1,100 in attendance to share our gratitude for all they do to keep our communities safe. The concert was generously supported by the NiSource Charitable Foundation / Columbia Gas.

Education and Community Engagement

Education programs included six Youth Orchestras; Mindful Music Moments; virtual Musicians Q&As; and professional development opportunities for teachers.

Columbus City Schools Partnership: During the pandemic, the CSO has developed new ways for students to continue learning remotely. For the 2020-2021 school year, our partnership with Columbus City Schools was expanded to ensure that central Ohio children continue to benefit from quality music education throughout the current pandemic. Partnership initiatives are provided free of charge to the district and include the digital music curriculum for all third grade students, access to the Mindful Music Moments stress reduction/mindfulness program to all schools in the district and all central Ohio preschools, the launch of two new interactive music education websites for kids and teens, and other musical resources to accommodate students and teachers engaging in distance learning and instruction. We also moved the Columbus All City Orchestra to a fully virtual program this year, allowing us to safely offer this free program for Columbus musicians in grades 9-12.

Community Engagement programming included community ensemble performances at venues throughout central Ohio; the Columbus Symphony Cares initiative; and Columbus Symphony Pride events that engage and serve the LGBTQ+ community, including Pride Night at Picnic with the Pops, and CSO Pride @ Bar Art Music events, in partnership with the Columbus Museum of Art.

We worked with Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin to identify parks within the Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks Department to host free CSO Community Concerts in 2021, targeting underserved neighborhoods where many residents are low-income, BIPOC, and/or New Americans.

Volunteer Organizations

The Columbus Symphony has a number of associate and fundraising groups whose members generously volunteer their time and talents to support our extensive schedule of concerts, community outreach activities, and education programs that serve thousands each year. Symphony volunteers have opportunities to work and learn in a variety of behind-the-scene environments, from working with students in music education programs to raising funds at special benefit events.

Columbus Symphony Chorus

The 130-member Chorus, comprised entirely of volunteer singers from central Ohio, performs major works from Bach through the 21st century. In 2013 the chorus premiered Stephen Paulus’ “Of Songs and Singing,” conducted by Jenkins and commissioned by the chorus to honor his 30+ years of service. In addition to their classical concerts, the Chorus’s annual Holiday Pops concerts, conceived and directed by Jenkins from their beginning in 1983, have grown into one of the best-loved musical traditions in the central Ohio area.
